Dungeon Settlers Characters, Races & Traits

Every settler in Dungeon Settlers is a bundle of race, background and personality. This guide breaks down the systems - racial aptitudes, the six attributes, trait effects and recruiting - so your party of four covers every gap.

Recruiting is how you fix a party, not how you start one: new members cost gold from the recruit list and arrive with randomized traits. Build around what you have first.

Races and their aptitudes

Humans receive bonuses to logging, construction and cooking, plus weapon aptitude with swords and greatswords - the all-rounder backbone of a first settlement.

Lizardmen trade some research and cooking efficiency for more mining and taming, and gain aptitude with maces. A Lizardman miner feeding a human-run kitchen is the classic Early Access pairing.

The six attributes

Each member has six major attributes - Constitution among them, which drives head and torso health - plus dozens of secondary combat and life stats layered on top.

Attributes matter in and out of combat: life stats decide how fast a settler harvests or cooks, while combat stats decide whether your four-member expedition comes home.

Traits: from curious to pessimistic

Traits are rolled from race, background and personality. A curious trait provides bonus XP; a pessimistic one may push intelligence instead - players are still mapping the full trait table in Early Access.

Because recruits arrive with randomized traits, the recruit list is a mini slot machine: sometimes a curious Lizardman drifter is worth three humans.

Skills and permanent death

Skills branch into main skills - active abilities keyed to weapon type, like a sniper stance for bows - and sub-skills that passively boost the member. Sword, mace, bow and fire magic are the four skill families to build a balanced party around.

Every investment is permanent in both directions: leveling is forever, and so is death. Stabilize downed members with an Aid Kit before the loss becomes real.
