Dungeon Settlers Settlement Building Guide

The settlement is half the game: every dungeon run is enabled or crippled by what you built above ground. This guide covers room design, the buildings that matter, and a build order that avoids the classic Early Access bottlenecks.
Free room design with walls and doors
You design rooms freely by placing walls and doors - there are no fixed blueprints. Bedrooms and dining areas keep members rested and fed; a forge fitted with anvils and smelters turns raw dungeon loot into usable equipment.
Because rooms are freeform, the classic mistake is building everything in one open field: without walls, sleep and work quality suffer and the indoor-only stations cannot be placed at all.
Build order that avoids bottlenecks
First storage - without it, settlers carry resources in personal inventories and cannot share them with anyone. Second, bedrooms and a dining area. Third, the roofed workshop building for the carpenter and research stations.
From there: fields for crops (which become meals and expedition rations), then the research queue that unlocks new buildings and equipment. A forge with an active smelter should come online as soon as dungeon metals start flowing home.
Farms, rations and camping supplies
Cultivate fields to grow crops - they feed the settlement and, processed further, produce the rations and camping supplies every expedition consumes. Humans cook faster, so put your human majority on kitchen duty.
Scale farming before recruiting: each new settler is a new mouth first and a new worker second.
Research and the long game
The research station unlocks new buildings and equipment tiers - the path from iron tools to the gear that survives deep floors runs through it. Since it is indoor-only and research-heavy Lizardmen are weaker at it, protect your human researchers: permadeath applies to them too.
FAQ
Why cant I build the carpenter station?
The carpenter and research stations can only be built indoors - place them inside a walled, roofed building.
Why wont my settlers share resources?
Without a storage building, resources stay in personal inventories. Build storage first.
What should I build first?
Storage, then bedrooms and dining, then a roofed workshop for carpenter and research. Farms come next, then the forge as dungeon metals arrive.
How do I make rations?
Grow crops in fields and process them into rations and camping supplies - the consumables every dungeon expedition burns through.
