How to Play Dungeon Settlers
Dungeon Settlers runs on one loop: the settlement prepares the party, the party raids the dungeon, and the dungeon loot makes the settlement stronger. This guide explains how each half works and where beginners lose momentum.
The settlement half
Above ground you manage a colony of settlers: design rooms with walls and doors, staff a forge with anvils and smelters, cultivate fields for crops, and produce rations and camping supplies for expeditions.
Research unlocks new buildings and equipment. Members have life-related stats too - they eat, sleep and gain mood from nearby allies holding torches.
The dungeon half
Each expedition sends up to four members into a randomly composed dungeon: floors and rooms change every run, and regions apply different environmental effects. The deeper you go, the rarer the resources - and the deadlier the remnants of magical experiments, from towering golems to acid-spitters.
Combat is real-time with pause. There are no turn limits; you pause, analyze enemy traits and patterns, position your party, and chain effects like stun, bleed, burn, provoke, vulnerable, charge attacks and summons.
Permadeath and the Aid Kit
Death is permanent. The safety valve is the Aid Kit: a downed character can be stabilized and carried home instead of lost forever. Downed too long without one, they die for good.
This is why camping supplies and Aid Kits are non-negotiable cargo, even on confident runs.
Feeding the loop
Loot flows home: wood logs and herbs become supplies, gemstone veins fund recruiting - new members can be hired for gold from the recruit list with randomized traits - and research converts rare finds into permanent upgrades.
Watch floor depletion: repeatedly farming the same dungeon level reduces its item drops, so progression means pushing new depth, not grinding old rooms.
